Q: How long does it take
to become a DJ?
Everybody learns at different
paces which is why I decided to train one on one to
accommodate varying learning paces. But since you asked
based on my experience training students, a student
who trains twice a week with me and practices everyday
taking the craft very seriously can be ready to play
out in 6 months. Not everyone will learn this fast,
but some have.
Q: Can I make a living
from being a DJ?
Yes you can. In the DJ industry
there are many levels of income that one can earn. For
example, Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto are DJs in the highest
earning bracket. There are many levels under this where
one can still make a living. As in other entertainment
jobs, your success depends on your talent, drive and
marketability.
Q: What do I need to
be a good DJ?
You need great listening skills,
great learning skills, a limited (preferably none at
all) ego and the strong desire to become good at your
craft. Love of music is a given.
Q: Is the equipment expensive?
The price range varies according
to what quality of equipment you want to buy. While
you can buy startup kits at a lower cost, I would advise
that if you are serious about becoming a professional,
you buy standard professional grade equipment to begin
with. For example, Technics 1200 Mk 2II and above turntables
and Gemini/Numark mixers..
Q: Is there any homework?
Yes there is always homework
and that is to practice as often as you can in addition
to exercises you will be given.
Q: How do you graduate?
You graduate when you’re
ready to play out. Being “ready” is a combination
of technical skills mastered and confidence levels reached.
Usually both the student and teacher know when you have
reached this point.
Q: How much does it cost?
Please visit our
rates page for this information.
Q: Where do I get my
music from?
From your local record or online
music stores. Good local record stores include Grooveriders
in Sherman Oaks and Temple
of Boom in Hollywood.
Q: Whose records will
I be using in class?
Bring a crate of your own records.
Q: I am a girl. Can I
be a DJ too?
Damn straight you can. There
are many top earning famous female DJs like DJ Collette,
DJ Rap, DJ Irene and Nurotika
(a past student of mine). Within the last few years,
female DJs have become more sought after by promoters
and club goes alike.
